Josh Busby Wins at “Night of Champions 2”!

Josh Busby improved his record to 6-1 Saturday night, January 23 as he defeated Chris Dempsey at “Night of Champions 2” in Tri Cities, WA. The Busby/Dempsey fight was for the 155 pound Championship Title.

With well over 30 fights under his belt, Dempsey had the experience advantage over Busby, but it had little impact on the fight’s outcome. Busby landed a few damaging kicks early in the 1st round before being knocked down during a punching exchange. Dempsey was immediately on top of him and landed a couple solid shots from top position before Busby sunk in a tight arm bar from his back forcing Dempsey to submit in the 1st round.

Busby’s next scheduled fight will be at the WWCC Dietrich Dome in Walla Walla, WA on March 20th. Watch our website for more information about upcoming MMA Fight Shows.

July 18th MMA Fight Show Recap!

July 18 Fight ShowJuly 18 Fight ShowSaturday night, July 18th saw the return of exciting Mixed Martial Arts action to Walla Walla! Calhoon’s was excited to co-promote the event. The show was held outdoors at Barnaby’s under the stars and under the lights on the warm summer evening. The outdoor summer show saw double the turn-out from last year’s outdoor summer show, attracting over 500 fans compared to last year’s 250 fans. Both the “Under 21” section and the “21 and Over” section were standing room only! The enthusiastic crowd was treated to a full evening of action-packed MMA competition. There were grueling, back and forth matches, quick knock-outs and plenty of tap-outs!

3 fighters from CALHOON’S competed at the event and each of them won their matches impressively!

Trey Haines got the evening started off right in the first fight of the night. The fans were treated to a back and forth, grueling war as Trey and his opponent both dished out the punishment. Trey defeated his opponent in the 2nd round with a guillotine choke from guard position. His record improves to a perfect 2-0! Trey is undecided on whether or not he will be competing again before taking off to college at the end of the summer. We wish him the best!

Mike Goudy also improved his record to 2-0 after viciously knocking his opponent out in only 9 seconds! It was the most devastating knock-out of the evening! Be sure to watch for Mike in one of our upcoming shows later this summer or this fall.

TJ has trained at various gyms around the Northwest. Most recently, he has been training at Calhoon’s. TJ’s match was for the 205 pound Championship Title. After a couple kicks and some impressive ground and pound, TJ TKO’d his opponent in less than 1 minute to become the 205 pound Champion!

Congratulations Trey, Mike and TJ!

Calhoon’s will be co-promoting another summer outdoor Mixed Martial Arts show at Barnaby’s on Saturday night, August 22nd. Tickets will be for sale in advance at Calhoon’s. Make your plans now to attend and tell all your friends!

April 11th MMA Fight Show Recap!

Team CALHOONSaturday night, April 11th, the fastest growing professional sport in the world returned to the Dietrich Dome at the WWCC! The audience was treated to 14 amazing, action-packed fights that left everybody on the edge of their seats screaming for more! The evening’s show drew the largest audience ever for an MMA show in Walla Walla. Team CALHOON had 3 fighters in the competition and finished the evening with a perfect 3-0 record. 2 other local fighters had spent the previous week training at Calhoon’s in preparation for their first fights inside the cage, and they also won their fights.

The Main Event Super Fight saw Calhoon’s undefeated Josh Busby improve his record to a perfect 5-0 at 155 pounds as he dismantled his opponent Cheron Spain in the first round. An initial flurry of punches and kicks led to a Busby take-down where Busby quickly and efficiently ground and pounded his opponent until he gave up his back and was forced to tap from a choke. Busby was awarded a Super Fight belt which is now on display behind the counter at Calhoon’s. Busby is scheduled to fight for the 155 pound championship title at the July 18th Barnaby’s show.

Team CALHOONCalhoon’s 155 pound Trey Haines stepped into the cage for his highly-anticipated debut with the roaring crowd behind him. After flurries of wild punches from his opponent, Haines lifted his opponent and slammed him Matt Hughes style, much to the enjoyment of the screaming spectators! Haines superior wrestling skills were too much for his opponent. Following a second impressive slam, Haines destructively ground and pounded his opponent into submission. In the back room following the victory, Haines was all smiles from ear to ear exclaiming, ‘That was sooo fun!’.

Calhoon’s owner, 170 pound Ryan Calhoon, also stepped into the cage for his first time, unaware that his opponent, Robert Evans, was stepping into the cage for his 28th time, and was also a previous Super Fight belt winner. In what many spectators later called the fight of the night, Calhoon and Evans treated the crowd with a grueling, back and forth war that went 3 rounds. Round 1 saw a lot of Calhoon knee strikes from clinch position and Evans eventually taking Calhoon down and securing mount. From mount, Evans landed a lot of punches and eventually locked in a tight armbar. Calhoon was able to escape from the armbar, reverse the position, and end the 1st round mounted on Evans. Round 2 saw some effective kicking from Calhoon and Calhoon taking Evans back where he landed punches for most of the round. Round 3 began with some punching, and then Evans taking Calhoon down. After missed armbar and triangle attempts, Calhoon tapped Evans out with just 20 seconds left in the 3rd round with a Kimura shoulder lock from bottom position.

It was an exciting, action-packed evening of Mixed Martial Arts! The fight card also included a fast-paced Boxing match and a Kickboxing match.

Special thanks to our sponsors: Koncrete Industries, The Worm Ranch, Les Schwabb’s, Valley Vision and Coca Cola for helping make the show possible! Also thanks to Calhoon’s sponsor - Dr. Dan Bruner at Advance Health Clinic for all the help with Calhoon’s fighters!

January 17th MMA Fight Show Recap!

Team CALHOONSeth Small made quick work of his opponent, dismantling him in the 1st round after an impressive slam.

Oswald Corona dominated his opponent for most of the 1st round, ground and pounding him from top position. Corona ended up getting caught in a triangle choke, however, and was forced to tap.

Robert Wipf stepped into the cage for his first time against an extremely tough opponent with years of boxing and kickboxing experience and competitions under his belt. Though he was game for a fight, Wipf was forced to tap from an ankle lock in the 1st round.

Mike Goudy, also stepping into the cage for the first time, defeated his heavyweight opponent in the 2nd round when his opponent was unable/unwilling to continue. Goudy demonstrated superior technique in the victory, though his opponent was eager to throw down. A highly anticipated rematch is being discussed for the upcoming July 18 Barnaby’s show.

October 18th MMA Fight Show Recap!

Team CALHOONSaturday night, October 18th, the fastest growing professional sport in the world returned to the Dietrich Dome at the WWCC! The show was put on by Northwest Elite Martial Arts and Calhoon’s Martial Arts & Fitness. The audience was treated to 11 amazing, action-packed fights that left everybody on the edge of their seats screaming for more! The evening’s show drew the largest audience ever for an MMA show in Walla Walla. Team CALHOON had 6 fighters in the competition and finished the evening with a 4-2 record.

In the first fight of the evening, Calhoon’s 145 pound Oswald Corona displayed improved striking as he scored with some destructive knees and leg kicks that echoed throughout the dome. His aggressive style scored points for him in the first round where he finished the round on top in a dominant position ready to damage his opponent if not for running out of time. He unfortunately got caught by a good shot early in the second round that resulted in a TKO stoppage that some argued was a bit premature. With his improving skills and great attitude, we know that Oz will return stronger and even more prepared next time!

Seth Small winsIn the second fight of the evening, Calhoon’s 205 pound Seth Small stepped into the ring for his first time ever and made quick work of his opponent. After a leg kick and a couple punches, Small took his opponent to the mat and established a solid top position. From there, Small unleashed a barrage of hammer fists to his downed opponent that eventually led to a ref TKO stoppage. Small’s opponent suffered a broken nose and was unable to continue.

Kevin Haken winsIn the fifth fight of the evening, Calhoon’s 170 pound Kevin Haken stepped into the ring for his first time ever. Haken worked his methodical game plan well, as he threw controlled punches and leg kicks as he had practiced ahead of time in the gym. His strikes were calculated and his jab precise, as it connected frequently. In the second round, Haken connected with an uppercut from the clinch that opened a cut on his opponent’s eye that streamed for the rest of the fight. His opponent was game as they both continued to throw measured punches and kicks, but Haken was able to inflict more damage on his opponent and finished the 3rd round with a non-stop barrage of punches to win the 30-27 unanimous decision.

Kenny Ziegele winsIn the ninth fight of the evening, Calhoon’s 185 pound Kenny Ziegele stepped into the ring for his second time. His opponent had not made weight, coming in a full 10 pounds over at 195 pounds. Ziegele agreed to take the fight anyway. An early combination of punches from Ziegele backed his opponent into the ropes where the opponent soon crumpled to the mat in a heap. From a dominant top position, Ziegele landed several more bombs as the ref stepped in to stop the fight. Ziegele’s impressive 25 second TKO improves his MMA record to a perfect 2-0.

The tenth fight of the evening was the Semi-Main Event Super-Fight. Calhoon’s 155 pound Josh Busby stepped into the ring with a perfect 3-0 record. Busby had originally planned on a shot at the 155 pound title, but the 155 pound champion had been unable to defend his title at this show. Instead, they found the toughest fighter available, also with a perfect 3-0 record, for Busby to have a Super-Fight with. Busby put his crisp, yet powerful punches on display quickly as he connected with cracking strikes. On the rare occasion that Busby found himself on the mat underneath his opponent, he was able to execute impressive reversals, resulting in him ending up on top and unleashing furious ground and pound on his opponent. At the end of the 3 round contest, Busby didn’t have a mark on him except for his swollen purple left foot from kicking his opponent. His opponent looked like he had been in a car wreck. Busby won the unanimous decision and a plaque for winning the Super Fight. Busby’s record now stands at a perfect 4-0, and he is awaiting a title fight for the 155 pound belt to be held in Walla Walla some time in January. Keep watching this website for information on Busby’s upcoming 5 round 155 pound championship title fight.

The last fight of the evening was the Main Event for the 145 pound championship title. Calhoon’s Jimmy Merkley stepped into the ring with a 3-0 record. His more experienced opponent held a record of 20-8. At the opening bell, Merkley’s opponent immediately rushed him with flurries of punches knocking him to the mat. Merkley was eventually able to tie his opponent up in a clinch, but then found himself stuck in a tight guillotine choke in his opponent’s guard. While most fighters would have been finished from all the punches and/or the guillotine choke, Merkley fought through it all and eventually escaped the choke. He was in top position and landed several punches of his own. The rest of the first round, Merkley pretty much controlled. At the end of the round, Merkley had a guillotine choke of his own, but time ran out. At the beginning of the second round, his opponent again rushed in immediately with barrages of punches. Merkley survived the initial onslaught, but eventually got caught by a solid punch that knocked him to the mat. His opponent was awarded the 2nd round KO victory and 145 pound championship title. Merkley showed a lot of maturity and composure in the fight, even though he lost. One of the officials later said that his opponent wasn’t a better fighter, just more experienced. There is no doubt that Merkley will continue improving as a fighter as he gains more experience. With only 5 months of training at Calhoon’s with no prior training, a 3-1 record is still quite impressive! Merkley has since returned to his home town of Pocatello, ID where he now resides with his girlfriend. He plans to visit Walla Walla and Calhoon’s on occasion as he has developed a close relationship with the coaches and many of the gym members.

Fight videos will be available soon on Calhoon’s Fight Club page.

Busby and Merkley both victorious!

Jimmy and JoshTeam Calhoon members Josh Busy and Jimmy Merkley both improved their records to a perfect 3-0 Friday night in impressive fashion!

In the 145 pound weight division, Merkley set a new record by knocking his opponent out in only 5 seconds, beating the previous record of 11 seconds!  His opponent, Kenny Langis, came out aggressive and threw a nice jab cross combo and Merkley countered with a cracking right that dropped Langis to the mat in a heap.  One more punch to the already unconscious Langis was all the ref needed to see before officially stopping the match at only 5 seconds!  A dazed and confused Langis was eventually able to get to his feet with assistance, and apparently didn’t even realize the match was already over.  Merkley’s next fight will be for the 145 pound title against the previous knockout record holder October 18th at the Walla Walla Community College Dietrich Dome.  His opponent, Chris ‘One Punch’ Dempsey, holds a record of 7-0, all by way of knockout.  Dempsey’s nickname of ‘One Punch’ was given to him after he had set the record for quickest knockout of 11 seconds, the record now owned by Merkley.

In the 155 pound weight division, Busby was able to rack up another highlight reel KO victory over his opponent.  Busby was rocked early on by the former Team Calhoon fighter, Evian Rodriguez, actually being dropped to the canvas by some Rodriguez punches.  Busby was able to hold on and recover though, eventually pulling guard and taking minimal damage while on his back.  The fight eventually ended up back on the feet.  After some punching and kicking exchanges, Busby landed the decisive head kick that crumpled Rodriguez.  A couple extra punches to the downed Rodriguez and the ref stepped in to declare Busby the winner.  All 3 of Busby’s impressive victories now have ended by crushing TKO ref stoppage!  Busby’s next fight will be a ‘Super Fight’ for the semi Main Event at the Walla Walla Community College Dietrich Dome October 18th.

Team Calhoon member Oswald Corona also made his MMA debut.  Corona scored early with strikes, but eventually lost by tap out due to choke.  Corona showed a lot of promise and will no doubt return even stronger next time after he has some more training time under his belt.

Ryan Calhoon on TV discussing “Backyard Brawling”

KEPR News recently produced a special news story on “Backyard Brawling”, an activity that is rapidly gaining popularity across the country including our little town of Walla Walla. The KEPR news team interviewed some different “Brawlers” from around the area and asked them questions about what happens at these brawling events. To contrast, the news team also spent time at Walla Walla’s CALHOON’S Martial Arts & Fitness interviewing owner and Head Instructor Ryan Calhoon to get the perspective of a professional trainer and gym owner.

Team Calhoon Successful this past weekend!

Jimmy Merkley in the ring Jimmy Merkley in the ring Jimmy Merkley and company

Various members of Calhoon’s competed around the Northwest this past weekend. Team member Jimmy Merkley improved his MMA record to 2-0 after defeating his opponent Saturday night at a large outdoor show in Tri-Cities. The fight was a high-paced war full of punches, kicks, scrambles and near submissions! The roaring crowd cheered the fighters on through 2 frenzied rounds of back and forth action. Jimmy landed the more damaging punches and kicks while on the feet, but both fighters had near submission finishes while on the ground. With both fighters fatigued and battle-weary at the conclusion of round 2, Jimmy dug deep as he readied himself for round 3. His opponent’s corner through in the towel however, as his opponent was apparently unable to continue, and Jimmy got the much deserved win. Congratulations to Team Member Jimmy Merkley! To view Jimmy’s fight videos, see Jimmy Merkley on the Calhoon’s Fight Club page!

Team Members Kenny Ziegele and Ryan Evans grappled against competitors from all around the Northwest this past weekend in the Sub League Finals Grappling Tournament in Portland, OR. Ryan Evans becomes Calhoon’s first Black Sash student!

History was made as Ryan Evans, longest training student of Ryan Calhoon’s, was awarded his Black Sash after over 7 years of training. In 8 years of teaching, this was the first Black Sash ever given out by Ryan Calhoon. During what was thought to be just a “Black Belt Demonstration”, Ryan Evans performed all of the requirements necessary to earn the rank of Black Sash from Calhoon’s over the course of 3 evenings. On the first night, Ryan spent an hour demonstrating Martial Arts curriculum ranging from White Sash through Brown Sash within a testing format. This consisted of a variety of individual techniques as well as practical improvised applications against single and multiple attackers. The “demonstration” concluded with an impressive Martial Arts display in which Ryan repeatedly fought off 3 skilled attackers simultaneously for 10 minutes. On the second night, Ryan demonstrated the intensive 2 hour physical Black Sash test. It consisted of 50 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 50 squat thrusts, 10,000 straight punches (which at over 3 punches per second, took 50 minutes!) and 1 hour of cardio on the Elliptical Trainer, all consecutively! On the third and final night, Ryan spoke in front of a large audience of students and guests for an hour about the life-skills he has developed through his Martial Arts training. Ryan answered questions on a variety of topics ranging from why kids should train Martial Arts, to examples of his personal challenges over the last 7 years of his training, to his future goals and how his future will be different because of his Martial Arts training. Ryan’s insightful words were thought-provoking and inspiring for all in attendance. It was a great opportunity for students of all ages as well as guests, to hear first hand about the many life-enhancing benefits available to individuals through dedicated Martial Arts training.

Congratulations again to Calhoon’s first ever Black Sash student—RYAN EVANS!!!

Fight Club member Josh Busby wins again!

Josh and coaches Josh and opponent Josh in the ring

Calhoon’s Fight Club member Josh Busby improved his record to 2-0 in impressive fashion Saturday night, January 12th in Asotin, WA. After his impressive TKO victory in his first fight, the matchmaker made sure to give Josh an even tougher opponent this time. It only took Josh about a minute and a half to dismantle this opponent, and when he was finished, there wasn’t a butt in a seat anywhere in the entire room! Fight highlights included an impressive high kick that knocked his opponent to the canvas, a devastating display of brutal ground and pound and a power slam ala Quinton Rampage Jackson, all brought to you by Josh Busby Entertainment. Calhoon’s coaches Ryan, Kenny and Travis were in Josh’s corner for the match, and many of Calhoon’s gym members were in the crowd cheering Josh on. Congratulations Josh Busby! Click here to view the video of the fight, or see Josh’s bio under Calhoon’s Fight Club.

Brian Shields – New Youth and Adult MMA Coach!

Calhoon’s is extremely excited to announce the addition of its latest team member! Brian has an extensive background training MMA at the world-famous Team Quest gym, and most recently actually being a coach at Xtreme Couture in Vancouver, WA. At Xtreme Couture, Brian instructed both Youth and Teen MMA programs. Brian is also an accomplished fighter himself, having fought numerous times around the western half of the United States with a winning record. Brian has also personally trained with a who’s who list of world class UFC fighters. See his bio under “Staff” for more information.

Brian will be heading up the Youth MMA program and assisting in the Adult MMA workouts and will be working directly with members of Calhoon’s Fight Club! It is anticipated that his role will continue to increase with the gym as he becomes more familiar with Calhoon’s programs and curriculum.

5 Year Anniversary and “Focus on Family Fitness” Promotion!

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been 5 years since Calhoon’s first opened its doors for business! 5 years ago, Ryan had already been instructing Martial Arts classes for 2-3 years at another school and then decided to go out on his own. With only 5 original students (who are all still training with him), Calhoon’s first facility was just over 400 square feet (roughly the same size as the Boxing Ring in the new facility)! A year or so later, Calhoon’s outgrew the space and moved into a 1200 square foot space next to the Modern Restaurant where classes were taught for the next 3 ½ years. With over 100 members currently, Calhoon’s new 5000 square foot facility is over 10 times the size of the first facility! Calhoon’s Martial Arts & Fitness and its staff would like to thank all of the families that have helped support the gym over the last 5 years and vote it the “Best Martial Arts School in Walla Walla”.

With the big 5 year anniversary, Calhoon’s is offering a special “Focus on Family Fitness” promotion resulting in HUGE savings on memberships for the entire family!!! 3 different memberships will be available—Youth Full Memberships, Adult Full Memberships (for ages 13 and older) and Fitness Memberships (available only for adults 13 and older). If you are an existing member of the gym, inquire at the front desk about free and discounted upgrades that are available now with your current membership! If you are not yet a member, call the gym and schedule your appointment today to find out about the HUGE savings being offered to new members with this special promotion!

The goal of this promotion is to get more family members in the gym involved in the many different classes and services Calhoon’s offers, rather than just sitting back and watching one family member working out. Calhoon’s wants to encourage and make it possible for all moms and dads to work out in the Fitness Center while their child is in Martial Arts classes, and spouses to work out while their spouse is in a class on the mats. With more classes available at no extra charge, a motivated individual can work out at the gym every night of the week if they want to, or just come on the nights they are available. And their family can come along and workout too! Calhoon’s isn’t just “Focusing on Fitness”, they’re “Focusing on Family Fitness”. This is something healthy that the whole family can do together.

Call today and schedule a time to find out more about the “Focus on Family Fitness” promotion and the HUGE savings available to you and your family!

Official UFC T-shirts now available! Just in time for the holidays!

Calhoon’s is excited to now offer a wide variety of official UFC T-shirts available in multiple colors, designs and sizes. If you know somebody who is a UFC fan, an official UFC T-shirt would make an exciting gift! Check out our large selection of UFC T-shirts in our Pro Shop

Fitness Center now open on Fridays!

Adult gym members can now work out in the Fitness Center on Fridays between the hours of 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. As more members continue to join Calhoon’s, the hours will continue expanding! Also don’t forget to sign up at the front desk for early morning Fitness classes with Jen. As soon as we have 5 people signed up, we will start offering those classes at no extra charge to our members. We are thinking about holding the classes at 6:30 a.m., but want feedback from members before we make the final decision.

GYMNASTICS for 2–10 year olds!

Calhoon’s is excited to now offer Gymnastics classes for 2–4 year olds and for 5–10 year olds! 2–4 year olds will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00–6:45, and 5–10 year olds will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:00–8:00. Cost is only $50/month. Classes are taught by Krystal Woolhouse who has over 10 years of Gymnastics training and several years of coaching experience. For more information, see “Gymnastics” under “Programs”.

CALHOON’S Fight Club competing November 10th in Moses Lake

3 members from CALHOON’S Fight Club will be competing Saturday, November 10th in Moses Lake, Wa. Joel Litchfield and Josh Busby, fresh off their recent victories in Asotin, each hope to improve their records to 2-0. Kalem Klinefelter will also be fighting for CALHOON’S and looks to improve his record to 2-0 as well. For more information about the event, please inquire at the gym.

CALHOON’S Fight Club Members JOEL LITCHFIELD and JOSH BUSBY both victorious in Asotin Saturday night!

Grand opening

It was both Joel and Josh’s first MMA fight. They were each the Visitor who would be fighting the local hometown fighter. For Joel, his original opponent was a no show. Weeks and months of sweaty, grueling workouts were now appearing to have been for nothing. But then another fighter whose opponent was a no show was offered as an opponent for Joel. The only problem was this fighter was a thick 200 pounds and had been scheduled to fight a 210 pounder. Joel was in the 185 pound division. Additionally, this fighter already had 7 fights under his belt, while most fighters in this show were fighting for their 1st or 2nd time. This available opponent not only had 15 pounds on Joel, he also had a lot more experience than Joel! Calhoon’s coaches deliberated for awhile, and with Joel’s ambitious final approval, agreed to take the fight.

Grand opening

When it was time for Joel’s fight, he and his corner-men Ryan and Kenny entered the cage first to a resounding echo of ‘Boo’s’ while Coach Travis stood close by, serving double duty as Team Calhoon’s cut-man. It was obvious who the crowd favorite was when Joel’s opponent made his way to the cage. The standing room only crowd erupted with screams and cheers as the larger adversary entered the cage. Round 1 went back and forth with Joel landing some good counter punches after his opponent’s missed attempts. The slightly larger opponent was able to take Joel down once or twice, but Joel defended well from guard and no effective strikes were landed. Joel continued scrambling and got to top position a couple times and threw some punches from top position. When the fight was eventually stood back up, the opponent landed a cracking kick to Joel’s body, which appeared to have little effect as Joel muscled his opponent up against the cage and landed a few damaging knees. Round 2 saw more of the same see-saw battle - a take-down or two from the opponent, Joel defending well and taking no significant damage from guard, scrambling well and occasionally ending up on top, and landing a few good punches when on their feet. Towards the end of the round, while in his opponent’s guard, Joel got caught in a tight arm bar. Joel ended up on his back, his arm fully extended, totally stuck in an arm bar that anybody else would have been tapping out from, or having their arm broken. Seconds later, Joel beautifully executed the exact arm bar escape that he had been training for a month in the gym. Joel survived round 2, and still had both of his arms. Joel’s conditioning really came into play at this point. Even though he was extremely fatigued from the grueling back and forth match with his larger, more experienced opponent, the opponent was so fatigued he couldn’t even stand up during the 1 minute break. He also had an eye that was swelling half shut to go along with his visible bumps and bruises. The 3rd and final round saw two fatigued fighters throwing bombs and laying it all on the line trying to finish their opponent. The round ended and the fight went to a decision. All 3 judges scored the fight for the winner by unanimous decision – JOEL LITCHFIELD!!! Hats off to Joel’s opponent for giving it his all!

When his fight was up, Josh entered the cage with a pumped and determined look in his eye. Again, Ryan and Kenny were in his corner with Travis standing close by. There were a few cheers from screaming fans for Josh who was the Visitor, but not nearly as many as there were for the home-town favorite. Josh’s opponent was from the near-by Indian Reservation where they are known for having good grappling skills and for being really “tough”. Round 1 began with a few seconds of circling around the cage, and then Josh landing a couple crushing punches that echoed throughout the room like the crack of a baseball bat. The opponent had little to offer in comparison to Josh’s superior striking ability. The opponent landed a couple good leg kicks which Josh later said he never even felt. Josh was able to successfully stuff the opponent’s take-down attempts and continue landing damaging blows. Round 1 ended with Josh just getting warmed up and his opponent looking like he had already been in 2 fights. Round 2 saw Josh again landing crisp, cracking punching combos. At one point, it appeared as though the opponent was going to get a successful take-down and get Josh on his back. The opponent was on all fours with Josh glued to his side. As the opponent continued to control one of Josh’s legs and worked to try to achieve top position, the ref eventually instructed the fighters to do something or he would stand them back up. Josh then proceeded to unleash a flurry of punishing strikes to his opponent’s body. Lesser men would have already been tapping, but this kid hung in there. Josh was eventually able to work to full mount position where he again unleashed his brutal ground and pound and was able to land furious, dominating, crushing strikes. The ref eventually stopped the match for the winner by TKO ref stoppage – JOSH BUSBY!!! Hats off to Josh’s opponent who took enough punishment for 3 people!

It was a great night for CALHOON’S Fight Club! Fight Club members Joel Litchfield and Josh Busby, along with Coaches Ryan Calhoon, Kenny Ziegele and Travis Maiuri, definitely left their mark in Asotin!

Stay tuned for dates and times for future fight shows in which members of CALHOON’S Fight Club will be competing!

CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN JOEL LITCHFIELD AND JOSH BUSBY!!!

5th Annual Graduation Party a Success!!!

Calhoon’s 5th Annual Graduation Party is in the books! With approximately 140 youth and adult students and their families in attendance, the special event was a great way to close out summer, and to kick off the beginning of fall and the new school year. 24 students from a range of ages tested for new belt and sash levels showcasing a wide variety of Martial Arts techniques, principles and personal discipline. Students were required to perform a number of their particular techniques from their appropriate curriculum, in addition to successfully completing their physical test. The always-challenging physical portion of the test required students to first perform a certain number of push-ups (with good form), followed by sit-ups and leg-burning squat thrusts. Next came the grueling Straight Punch workout that demanded up to 5000 consecutive Straight Punches with proper form to be thrown without stopping! The physical exam concluded with students performing a timed run of up to 45 minutes! The belt or sash the student was testing for determined how many of each of the different calisthenics each student had to do. Everybody passed their physical tests, some in worse shape than others!

These students have been working very hard over the past several months, and in some cases for the past year to be prepared for this test and promotion. I would really like to applaud all of their hard work and sacrifices they have made to get to where they are now. They have earned it!

We would like to congratulate each of the students who tested at the Graduation Party and earned their next belt or sash level!

Grand Opening and Robert Follis/Ed Herman Seminar a big Hit (Aug. 10, 2007)

Grand opening

Many people came to check out the new gym during our official Grand Opening Friday, July 27th.  97 Rock was also on hand, broadcasting live during the event.  Members of the community were excited and amazed with the new facility and all of the programs we were going to offer.  Most of Calhoon’s staff members were also at the event answering the guest’s questions.  Several people took advantage of the huge Grand Opening specials as well.  The highlight of the evening was when Robert Follis and Ed Herman arrived and began signing autographs.  Lots of MMA fans were able to get T-shirts signed and pictures taken with these celebrity UFC fighters.

Group seminar

Saturday July 28th, the mats and cages at the new gym got broken in UFC style!  Robert Follis (head coach and co-owner of the world-famous Team Quest Gym), along with Ed ‘Short Fuse’ Herman (professional UFC fighter and ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ reality TV show celebrity and finalist), treated seminar attendees at Calhoon’s to a full day of world-class MMA training!  If you missed the seminar, YOU DEFINITELY MISSED OUT!  The world-renowned Team Quest Fight Club has been home to many of Mixed Martial Art’s top competitors, including:  current UFC World Heavyweight Champion and Hall of Fame member Randy ‘The Natural’ Couture, PRIDE World Lightweight and Middleweight Champion Dan Henderson, #1 Middleweight Contender and Olympic Silver Medalist Matt ‘The Law’ Lindland, former UFC World Middleweight Champion Evan Tanner, and ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ contestants and legitimate contenders Ed ‘Short Fuse’ Herman, Chris Leben, Nate Quarry, and Josh Burkman, among others.  It was the opportunity of a lifetime getting to train with the Head Coach from this distinguished, award winning Fight Club.  Not only were the coaches amazing technicians, they were also fantastic teachers and instructors.

Calhoon’s will be hosting more MMA seminars with world-famous UFC fighters and coaches in the future, so stay tuned!

Annual Summer Graduation Party Sunday Sept. 9, 3:00-7:00

Pre-register now for you, your family and friends to attend Calhoon’s annual Summer Graduation party and BBQ!  The event will be held at Rooks Park at the new covered facility.  Approximately 25 youth and adults will be testing for their new belts and sashes, ranging from 5 year olds testing for their Gold Belts, to adults testing for their Red and Brown Sashes—the highest ranking students in the entire school!  Students being tested will be required to demonstrate their appropriate level curriculum and techniques in addition to performing their specific physical fitness requirements.  This year, Calhoon’s will be providing all of the food—BBQ’d hamburgers and hotdogs, a variety of chips, salads and desserts, and drinks, along with plates, napkins, condiments, etc.  Cost is only $5 per person.

FAMILIES NEED TO BE PRE-REGISTERED AND PREPAID BY SEPT 1ST!  We will need to know how many people are coming with your group and have that prepaid so that we can make sure to have enough food on hand.  Students testing for their next belt or sash also need to prepay their $25 Testing Fee.  This can all be done through the front desk at the gym.  Plan to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to set on the grass.  Testing will start around 3:00 and will go until about 5:00–5:30.  We will then start the BBQ, and then by 6:00 begin presenting new belts and sashes to the students and taking pictures.  All students who will be testing for a new stripe will do so at the gym on their regular test day at the beginning of September.  Students that aren’t testing at the Graduation Party should still wear their uniforms for group pictures.  They should wear their black gi pants and either a black club T-shirt or their gi top, their belt or sash, and shoes.  We will also be recognizing the Leadership Team and Black Belt Club.  This is our 5th or 6th annual summer graduation party and they are always an event the family looks forward to.  Invite your friends!  For more information, call the gym and speak directly to one of our staff members
